Bogues Encourages Youth to "Always Believe" - April 22, 2013

Muggsy Bogues PhotoFormer Charlotte Hornet Muggsy Bogues paid a visit to WBTV studio's on Monday afternoon. Muggsy has always been determined to motivate the youth to believe that they can overcome the odds, by using his own story as an example. As many know, he's widely known for his success as a 5'3" NBA Athlete. Muggsy's foundation, Always Believe Inc., took a timeout for several years after his mother passed away. But today Bogues was more than thrilled to say it's back, and better than ever. "I am tired of all this bullying going on, where our young kids are not able to reach there full potential, believe in themselves, or have a dream that someday could be reached." Always-Believe.org has been re-launched, and the goal is to raise awareness and funds, so that the youth have a safe environment to learn, grow and play. "We need a place for the youth to go, people for them to talk to, and someone to encourage them. I remember as a kid being small, being picked on. If I would have allowed that to get to me, I wouldn't be here talking about this today." Read Article

Muggsy Bogues: Not Too Small To Ball - 2013

Muggsy Bogues PhotoFrom a young age Muggsy encountered doubters who constantly told him he was too short to play basketball. Muggsy heard them, but he refused to listen. Muggsy was part of an undefeated championship team at Dunbar High School in Baltimore, Maryland with former NBA stars Reggie Williams, David Wingate and Reggie Lewis, and went on to play college basketball at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. The point guard explains that it's important for young athletes to be fearless and have thick skin. "When you're fearful and you care about what other people think, it limits you and it stops you from reaching your potential," he says. "Mainly I just understood that I had a gift of playing the game of basketball. I really didn't care about what people thought, I think that really carried over and allowed me to become who I am. When you have that belief—I don't care about what anybody is thinking, and just focus on what you're trying to do, that carries you a long way." Although his self-confidence helped him to overcome many obstacles, Muggsy also credits his strong support system, which consisted of his family and his coaches for his success. He had a close network of people who believed in him and continued to support him in his basketball aspirations. One of his biggest supporters was his mom, Elaine Bogues. Read Article

Bogues Q and A With Slam Magazine - September, 2012

Muggsy Bogues PhotoMuggsy Bogues has always garnered more attention due to his height rather than his game, when in reality, it should have always been the other way around. To show respect for an under-appreciated player, our friends over at KIX are paying homage to the point guard’s career by collaborating with him on a series of tees and shorts that feature Bogues exclusively. Bogues Visits Australia - September, 2012

Muggsy Bogues PhotoBASKETBALL fans rejoice: NBA star and long-time fan favourite Muggsy Bogues is coming to Ringwood. That's right, Ringwood. The diminutive point guard is making the long trek from the US for a one-night-only talk show at the Karralyka Theatre on October 13. Bogues, 47, is making the trip specifically for this event, and his visit is sure to have hoop-heads in a spin. The event, titled "Muggsy: The Tyrone Bogues Story", will be hosted by National Basketball League hall-of-famer and broadcaster Steve Carfino and will cover Bogues' journey to and through the professional ranks. His 10-year spell with the Charlotte Hornets in the mid-90s coincided with basketball's surging popularity throughout Australia, and he found cross-over appeal as a cast member in the Michael Jordan movie, Space Jam. Bogues said he and his wife were looking forward to returning to Australia, which is why he signed on for the show. The man behind the event is Croydon's Ryan Sinclair, a basketball tragic from way back. Read More

Bogues Can Teach Charlotte Bobcats a Lesson - June, 2012

Muggsy Bogues is showing campers at Crews Road Recreation Center in Matthews a crossover dribble. He goes between his legs and hard to his right, all precision and speed, and now he’s free. Those of us who watched the Charlotte Hornets in the 1980s and ’90s have seen this move. Bogues was the team’s point guard and soul, a 5-foot-3 leader seemingly immune to fatigue. A collection of personalities and talents, the early Hornets were more special than almost any of us – player, fan, media – realized. They also had it easy. Charlotte was by major league sports standards an outpost in 1988, when the NBA sent the Hornets our way. It was like getting running water or electricity. There was nothing to compare the Hornets to or measure them against. No Charlotte team, not even the Carolina Panthers, has or will receive a warmer welcome. Read More

Bogues Breaks In Renovated Dome at Madison Square Center - June, 2012

Are you from here? The right arm of the man sitting at the top of the key, two seats over from Mayor  Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, answers the question. Yes, the shotgun pellets lodged in that arm since he was 5 years old say that he's from here, shot hoops here, was shot here and saw friends die here. "It's just great to be back home in Baltimore," Muggsy Bogues, told those assembled at Monday's unveiling of the renovations to The Dome. "We didn't have this type of facility," Bogues continued. "But having this, [we see] Under Armour and the NBA have decided to make sure [kids] become active and continue to understand what's important." As a kid in Baltimore's Lafayette projects, Bogues decided early on what was important for him, and what was important for him was basketball. When the older kids laughed at him for being too small and wouldn't let him play, he tied empty milk crates to a chain-link fence to serve as a hoop. When his father went to prison for 20 years for armed robbery and his friends turned to the drug game, Bogues committed himself to the court. Read More

Bogues Leads Another HS Powerhouse - January, 2012

"Far from the bright lights of NBA arenas or March Madness Bracketology, former NBA point guard Tyrone “Muggsy” Bogues has spent the past five months pacing the sidelines at a private high school gym in Charlotte, North Carolina. Although, the diminutive ex-NBA point guard has the stature of the average high school freshman, this isn’t a 21 Jump Street-inspired attempt at rekindling his high school hoops greatness as an undercover transfer student. He’s the head coach. As the NBA has globalized the game of basketball in the past two decades, an emerging prep basketball powerhouse at United Faith Christian Academy’s unique situation is also proving that basketball’s multinational reach has trickled down to the high school level as well. Bogues Shares Love of Basketball Around the World - April, 2012

"This was no scoot around the corner to pick up milk, bagels and the morning newspaper. The shortest player in NBA history took his longest trip ever to coach a single afternoon of basketball. First, it was a two-hour flight to Toronto. Then a 7 1/2-hour flight to Brussels, Belgium. And finally an 8 1/2-hour flight to New Delhi. All that to teach 75 kids from India how to dribble and shoot. No sightseeing, no banquets. And ex-Charlotte Hornet Muggsy Bogues loved it. "I feel like this is my mission - to help introduce kids to basketball everywhere," Bogues said upon return from the quickest transcontinental trip imaginable. Bogues was representing the NBA in the league's ongoing effort to globalize basketball. With such a large population (about 1.2 billion), India has to have plenty of athletes with unrealized hoops potential, just as China eventually produced Yao Ming and Yi Jianlian. Bogues has the resume; he played 14 NBA seasons for four franchises, mostly in Charlotte, where he still lives. Read More

How To Make It In America - November, 2011

"As a kid, I just wanted to fit in, and basketball was my savior." When Tyrone "Muggsy" Bogues speaks, his countrified voice carries an air of authority and his citified words deliver a stainless steel message. Hardly what you'd expect from a 5-3, 100-something-pound Baltimore baby turned Charlotte-based adult. The shock at hearing mighty words come from a mini man is short-lived, though. After all, Bogues has been defying expectations since his escape from the womb 46 years ago. Barely born into this world after his mother suffered a prior miscarriage, Bogues focused on basketball from a young age. Read More

Bogues Takes Reigns at United Faith - September 19, 2011

Former Wake Forest and Charlotte Hornets point guard Muggsy Bogues is the boys' basketball coach at private United Faith Christian. He will start Tuesday. Bogues, 46, replaces Shaun Wiseman, who led United Faith to three straight appearances in the N.C. 1A Independent Schools championship game. The Falcons won the title in 2009 and 2010. "My goal is to make sure I do a great job this year and give the kids what they need," Bogues said. "I'm looking forward to working with the kids and helping to build the program." Bogues was an assistant on Wiseman's first state championship team at United Faith in 2009, which featured one of the players Bogues mentors and coaches, Ian Miller, now a sophomore point guard at Florida State. Bogues Thanks Mark Cuban - SLAM Magazine 2011

Deserved or not, Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has acquired somewhat of a lousy rap. Over the course of his 11-year ownership of the Mavericks, he's been accused of a lack of common sense, of insider trading and has lost over $1 million in fines for actions or comments deemed inappropriate by the NBA. But for every negative associated with Cuban's name, there is an equal or greater positive. Just ask former NBA player Muggsy Bogues. "I've never met Mr. Mark Cuban, but I tell people that I thank him more than life itself," Bogues, 46, said recently over the phone from his home in Charlotte. "I had three years left on my contract when my mom passed away, and I decided it was time to move on [from basketball]. I walked away from the game with three years left on my contract. He (Cuban) could have easily just have bought me out of my contract, but he went on and honored it and paid the three years out and never looked back." Read More

Game Changers: Undersized Players Left Big Mark on NBA - NBA.com 2011

It was one of those remarks that most people thought was absurd at thetime, but not so much nowadays. Allan Bristow, former coach of the then-Charlotte Hornets, said: "Everyone talks about how we'll never see another Michael Jordan and we'll never see another Larry Bird. But truth is, we'll never see another Muggsy Bogues." You could say a lot of folks sold Bristow short. While we are indeed waiting for the next Jordan, and perhaps we saw the next Bird during the 2011 NBA Finals, our great-grandchildren might be the only witnesses the next time a 5-foot-3 player darts around the floor like a pinball and carves out a very productive NBA career. Plain and simple, NBA teams just aren't big on little guys anymore. Not that they ever were. But you just don't see an abundance of players under 6-feet on rosters, and definitely none in All-Star Games. That makes Muggsy, Spud Webb and Calvin Murphy before both of them, Game Changers who paved the way for the little man -- even though the NBA still practices size discrimination. Read More
